Long time NJARC member Stan Thompson passed away yesterday, Born on
Halloween in 1917, he was 85 years old.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Stan has lived in New Jersey for many
years. Stan lived with his son David in Avenel after his wife Katherine
passed away two years ago. For many years, Stan was an avid collector --
of old bottles! About 10 years ago, however, he suddenly switched to
radios and has been an enthusiastic old radio fan ever since. Like many
of our members, Stan had a professional background in electronics. He
retired from Eastern Airlines over twenty years ago after many years as
an electronic equipment service technician, and told great stories about
how emergency repairs on cockpit systems took him to many corners of the
globe. Among other career moves Stan was the proprietor of a radio and
television repair shop in the 1950s.
I car pooled to the meetings with Stan since he joined our club and had
plenty of time to get to know him well during the many years of Route 9
Friday afternoon rush hour shore traffic. Due to illness, he was unable
to attend most meetings for the past two years, however his interest in
the club remained high and he always inquired about what was going on.
Last month, for the first time in quite a while, he was feeling well
enough to attend, and he had hoped to be there this Friday.
Visitation will be at the Costello Funeral Home in Avenel, Wednesday 2-4
PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday at noon in the
Maple Hill Cemetery chapel, Ashley PA.
I bid farewell to a good friend.
