Phil,
I think this might be a chance to attempt a training session since there
is strong interest. I would be willing to try to handle a group of 4-5
individuals. What I think would work is setting up a group station with
enough basics (soldering irons, tools, etc) for each and a joint use of
tube testers, books, etc. as always. Assuming that most of the radios
would require only the normal assistance it should be able to keep
everyone busy doing their own work.
A quick one hour start up would include soldering, schematics (at least
tube pin counts) and an overview of each person's radio. Since hands on
is the best way to learn this could be an ideal way to start. I think
there are probably a fair number of people who have some knowledge and
wouold just need occasional assistance.=20
Assistance to the group when I get stuck could be provided as it always
is by our experts.

Marty,
You are correct, there was a miscommunication here.
This is the way I propose to salvage it. Even though I
will set up a display in the main auditorium, I will
spend most of my time in the clinic and will supervise
the radios coming in. We can also limit the number of
appointments to what we can handle, even if it is one
per hour. We can make up a sign when people enter to make
it clear that 'evaluation and troubleshooting are free, parts
are extra'. In the future I will ask Alex to let me read the
announcement before it goes out.

To The list...
I have some concerns about Alex's announcement. I was under the
impression=20
that the January repair clinic was to be a "members only" event. I know
that=20
Alex had arranged to have the radio, TV, phono exhibits available for
the public=20
as well as our clinic as a display in and of itself. But by inviting
public=20
radios for repair will make it nearly impossible for the staff to
handle our=20
own club members equipment which was the original intent of this clinic.
By=20
having Al Klase, Scott Marshall and Phil Vourtsis and others helping
with the=20
displays The number of qualified helpers is markedly lowered. We need
someone=20
to take on the responsibility of coordinating the radios and helpers.
The=20
helpers need to have advance notice of model numbers and symptoms if
possible. If=20
this was to be Al, he now is spread too thin.=20
Another concern is the promise of "free" repairs without any mention of=20
parts. Is the club prepared to give away parts? I don't think so.
I think it is necessary that any future press releases that involve the
NJARC=20
be cleared by the president with the appropriate approval of the board.
Happy holidays to all,
Marty Friedman, Trustee, NJARC
