Rob:
I agree with Don. rec.antiques.radio+phono has a lot of "threads" that go
in the direction of old TV. Unfortunately, like most newsgroups, there are
a few flamers and "know it alls" with lots of negative and non-constructive
comments/criticisms. This newsgroup is probably better behaved than most,
however, and tends to stay "on topic".
If you don't have a newsgroup service provider for free, as part of your ISP
package, you can read and post from www.Google.com. Just go there and then
to the "groups" button on their homepage. They'll sign you up for posting.
Reading is instant by topic, newsgroup name, etc. There's even a search of
the newsgroup names for all of the thousands that they post.
The great thing about Google is you can search the archived posts for many
years for topics in groups of your interest. The bad thing is that they are
slow. New posts take several hours to be viewable compared to a regular
newsgroup service which is usually very fast. You also have to become
accustomed to the way their threads are organized. A hardcore newsgroup
user uses a "newsgroup reader" which downloads the "headers" and properly
organizes posts for easy reading.
If you have AOL or Comcast there should be a newsgroup service provided for
you.
If you know about newsgroups please just disregard. I find so many very
computer literate people who know nothing about newsgroups. There is an
absolutely incredible amount of expertise and knowledge available from some
of them, on just about any conceivable subject you can imagine.
Phil
