Comments: GENERAL INFORMATION: Very busy month around the section. Lots
going on in Northwest and Southern, with many drills and exercises as well
as EMCOMMWEST 2005 in Reno. EMCOMMWEST, May 14-15 in Reno was an
overwhelming success. Participants were present from as far away as Iowa,
Louisiana, Idaho and most other western states. Pacific Division Director
and vice Director were present and a division cabinet meeting was held,
since all but 2 of the SM s from Pacific Division were present. The SM s
from Idaho and Utah were also on hand as guests. The event was well
attended, although I still have not received a final head count. SM Dick
Flanagan presided over the weekend, and many thanks to event chair Tony
Marcin, N7ACM who received a certificate of appreciation at the banquet.
Banquet speaker was Gordon West, WB6NOA who brought his commvan motorhome
from southern California. The Red Cross ECRV was on display all weekend from
Marysville, CA, along with several others. Good press coverage,
as 2 Reno TV stations came and conducted interviews, and
the Reno Gazette Journal gave a large page 2 story on the event. SEC
continues to work with Paul Cavnar, NN7B on development of a Nevada Section
training course. It will take some time for this work to be completed, due
to the vast nature of the material involved.

Section IRLP Net (2nd and 4th Saturdays) continues to grow in participation
from around the section. Others from neighboring sections check in from time
to time as well via the western reflector. Many thanks again to Kent, WA7AOR
for his hard work to continue linking and quality of the links available for
the nets and as a backup resource in time of disaster.

NORTHEAST REPORT: Nothing to report this month. Regular activities and no
drills or callouts repored by DEC.

NORTHWEST REPORT: Plans are still being formulated to put a repeater in
place for linking from Mineral County to more populated centers of the
Northwest District (Reno/Sparks/Carson City). Checking with Wide Area Data
Group for help on this.

Storey County EC Randy Davenport, KA4NMA will be stepping down in June due
to his move to South Carolina. Great thanks and deep appreciation to Randy
for his years of service to ARES. Some Churchill County membership may be in
question due to different reasons and may be resolved by next month. Drill
held with 18 members joining in Douglas County focus was staging procedures
and deployment practice. DCART members also participated in DEM s NV
Emergency Management training. 3 hams have now been identified as Comm Unit
Leaders for DEM office. Douglas County also participated in Broken
Propeller Exercise in conjunction with Washoe County and State DEM. That
exercise was held May 25. While it was on a weekday, good participation. The
drill centered at Reno/Tahoe International Airport, with scenario of a
downed plane. Washoe EOC, Red Cross and State DEM all involved with staffed
operations. Max Cornell, K0MC (Washoe EOC AEC) was event coordinator and did
a fantastic job. Evaluation of the ARES performance rated very well.
The exercise was also a test
of using ICS procedures. VHF/HF and packet modes all used. All involved
served agencies were very happy with amateur participation and response.
SOUTHERN REPORT: Great efforts and participation in SKYWARN Nets during
severe weather. Skywarn meeting held, and studies continue on Skywarn s
value especially in outlying areas of the District. Work concucted on
Skywarn website, spotter training and schedules. Charlie, AA5QJ; Vern
Garman, K0EGA, Art Sheldon, K7ZE and Charlie worked on Rotunda Thunda
Functional Exercise on May 25.

This was the last preparatory exercise before the full-scale exercise
scheduled for July 11-14, 2005. Clark County meeting held Memorial Day
Weekend with 31 members present. Praise from Emergency Manager on amateur
radio s roll in emergency operations. Cal Groom, KB6OEH named AEC for
Salvation Army and Joe Scanlan, N7XSD is AEC for UNLV. All in all, a very
busy but successful month within the section.
