Southern NV District EC Report for April 2004

The NV Section SKYWARN Net has had a few technical
problems this month, but we are still conducting the
net each Wednesday evening. Net check-ins from Las
Vegas, Pahrump and Elko had been heard on the
Wednesday night at 1900 local net. The exchange on the
net is the station's local weather and any discussion
regarding SKYWARN activities. In Las Vegas the net can
be heard on 146.46 simplex with a PL 123. In Elko, NV
the net can be heard on the W7LKO repeater. You may
also check into the net by using Echolink software, by
connecting to NV-GATE conference node.

I have completed our annual SKYWARN amateur radio
meeting held this past month at the Las Vegas NWS. I
am glad to report that we had 12 attendees at the
meeting. Most of the presentation dealt with how to
make better use of our SKYWARN web site for net
control operators and SKYWARN members. Thanks to Vern
K0EGA for making the changes to the site's front page.
The meeting discussed Convective Outlooks issued from
the Storm Prediction Center and the NWS IWIN web page.
This year the Las Vegas NWS would like to have Las
Vegas Regional SKYWARN operate weather nets for other
areas outside of the local area. For the most part, we
have VHF or UHF linked coverage into San Bernardino
Co., CA., Nye and Lincoln Co., NV and Mohave Co., AZ.
We will also be using APRS during SKYWARN nets from
the Las Vegas NWS SKYWARN station WX7LAS. APRS will
allow NCS to monitor mobile stations and home weather
stations.

This past month was the National Association of
Broadcasters NAB convention and NV Section Manager
Dick Flanagan K7VC, Pacific Division Director Bob
Viallo, W6RGG and ARRL President Jim Haynie, W5JPB
were present. An appointee dinner was held after the
conference meeting and Charlie AA5QJ was presented
with a Certificate of Appreciation for all his efforts
with Clark County ARES/RACES. Myself, Jim, Bob and
Dick signed the certificate. Thanks again Charlie for
a great effort!!

Southern Nye Co., EC Report by Dick AC7EL

This month we continued our participation in the
SHIELD (Surviving Hazards In Every Local Disaster)
program conducted by the Nye County Emergency
Management Department for sixth-grade students, which
I described in last month's report.
