My I.T. manager from work called this evening to inform me that
on of the weather bulletins I send had a virus attachment and was
'stripped' at my work address.
That means someone on one of the e-mail lists these bulletins
go to has an 'infected' computer. It appears to be the Klez virus
that propagates itself and produces 'bogus' e-mail addresses as
the return address. Subject lines vary all over the place. The
attached files usually have two suffixes such as:
REPORT.DOC.SCR
Any message that you are not expecting that has an attach-
ment, is suspect. DO NOT OPEN the attachment or it will
simply infect your PC and propagate the virus. Simply delete
the message and attachment and then empty your deleted
folder right away. Under no circumstances should you set up
your e-mail program to automatically open attachments or to
display graphics attached to messages.
Please, if you are receiving these bulletins, update your virus
protection files and scan your system because someone has
sent out several of these containing a partial weather bulletin
today. One return address was: nn7b-AT-earthlink.net and I
have never had an earthlink address. but, it made that up to
spoof recipients into thinking it is a legitimate message.
A little caution and awareness will prevent hours of grief with
an infected PC that is rendered useless until sanitized. Thanks!
