Greetings to All -
As a reminder, the ARRL has declared this Saturday, September 13, as
National Amateur Radio Awareness Day. In Reno, two radio stations will
be in operation where the public and members of the media can come to
learn more about amateur radio. One station will be portable, located
in the parking lot of the National Weather Service Office at 2350 Raggio
Parkway in Reno and operating under the NWS Reno callsign of WX7RNO.
The other station will be at the V.A. Medical Center at 1000 Locust
Street, Room 517, and will be operating under the Washoe County ARES
callsign of KE7R. Both station will operate from 10 AM until 4 PM local
time. Participation in operation of the stations is open to all amateur
radio operators, clubs, and amateur radio organizations. Don and I have
plugged this very hard to the local media and we are hoping to get some
publicity for ham radio through this effort.
If you would like to have your club or organization represented at
either or both station, please plan to join us. To have your club
represented, members of your club must be on site at either or both
stations to assist as operators and to greet the public/media and tell
them about amateur radio. Your club/organization will also need to
provide any signs, banners, or literature advertising your group as you
may desire. So far, no clubs or organizations other than Reno SATERN
have contacted Don or I to confirm they will be participating. This is
a bit surprising to me, and I hope we will have some of the other area
clubs represented.
You know how I like gimmicks, and indeed I've thrown one into the mix
here. We have organized a "SKED" for our Reno event stations with Mark
Spencer, WA8SME, operating from W1AW early Saturday afternoon. I'm not
going to say exactly where or when, you'll have to come out and
participate if you wish to avail yourself of this opportunity to speak
with ARRL HQ on the air.
For more information or details, call me at 425-6102. You may also
contact myself or Don Carlson, KQ6FM, on the air on the 146.610 repeater
system.
