Southern NV ARES District EC Report for June 2003
S.NV DEC Glenn KB7REO

This past month was a busy one for most hams, in
particular with Field Day.

This past month I called for a meeting with the
SKYWARN Net Control Operators. I felt it was needed to
introduce everyone to the operational scripts, tour
the Las Vegas NWSFO, and discuss starting a club. The
need for the club was to address how we could have a
more identifiable organization with respect to
registering with SKYWARN Recognition Day. Each
SKYWARN team or club in SRD last year had a club/team
station callsign representative of the NWS office.
Reno NWS last year obtained the call WX7RNO. Hopefully
we'll soon have a similar location callsign soon. The
club's name is Las Vegas Regional SKYWARN (LVRS). I am
the LVRS President, Jack N8RRL is the Vice-President
and John K6YDW is the trustee. The by-laws and
constitution are complete and are currently being
reviewed.

I am working on putting some ideas together for the
2003 SET. I would like to test NTS type messages
using the HF packet link between Bruce's AL7LS-7
HF/VHF node and Paul's WA6EWV-1 HF/VHF node in Tahoe,
NV. I've used the packet node here on 145.05 to reach
Matt's N7TOD packet station in Sparks, NV.

On a personal note, I have personally completed ARRL
CCE Level II course.

Southern Nye County ARES EC Report by Dick AC7EL

The Internal Revenue Service designated our ARES
corporation as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
This will help in fund-raising. Five members
participated in Pahrump's Field Day.

Lincoln County ARES EC Report by Lee K7NKH

The 1 volunteer hour was removing radio from Lincoln
County Sheriffs office which will be re-installed at a
later date in their new office. This is a radio that
will work the Nevada 1 and 3 state nets and also ham
frequencies.

- NE Clark County AEC Report:
Don DeCaria, NF7R AEC NE Clark County

PAST EVENTS:
1. We are getting pre-net check-ins for the Monday
Clark County net and relaying them in. using 147.39
Glendale machine (W7MVR). We never know from week to
week which one of us will make the cut, but we are
getting in! KD7TOK, and KB7WVU have been extremely
helpful! We have some members who monitor from home,
but are waiting to get on the roll call until they can
get on it in their own right (KD7ODF and KB7SXA). But
at least we are keeping those of us on the roll call
from being dropped for inactivity!
2. K6UDK honcho'ed a test session the 21st of June.
Had two test takers. Both passed for one new General
and one new tech plus! Both were from Las Vegas. VE's
were KC7GU, K7YWF and NF7R, in addition to K6UDK and
KD6DYZ.
3. Field Day went well for the new club call of W7MVR.
Most of the Moapa Valley Amateur Radio club showed up.
It was more social than operational, but the equipment
worked with contacts made on cw and phone, on 40/20/15
meters. Had the local LDS church Emergency Services
Coordinator visit the set up, and we set up a dialog
for future cooperation.
PLANNED EVENTS: Our next club meeting, 12 July 2003,
0830, at Sugar's in Overton, will host the Skywarn
coordination meteorologist who will present training.
Most members plan on attending. We do have a few that
will not be able to attend due to their training with
the Logandale FD that morning. We are already plotting
:-) for a return trip or looking where to have them go
for the training, as they are interested. KB7SXA and
KD7TYB are the particular ones.
MAJOR EVENT: On the evening of 30Jun, KE6VT put out a
call on the Glendale repeater requesting a 911 call.
He and his wife, KD6SKP (a Registered Nurse), had
witnessed an accident at MP104 on I15 with a car
overturned. NF7R took the call, and relayed it via 911
to NHP. The dispatcher had already just received a
call via (assumed) cell phone. A minute later, KD6SKP
returned from triage to report a 30 (approx) year old
woman with a partially severed left arm (amongst other
injuries) and she was in danger of bleeding out. NF7R
again called 911, relayed the medical assessment of
KD6SKP onscene. This resulted in the dispatch of the
rescue units from Bunkerville and Moapa, as well as
lifeflight being placed on launch alert. When NHP
arrived on scene, they confirmed the need for
lifeflight and took charge of first response medical
in addition to another RN who happened to be on scene.
KE6VT and KE6SKP then went on with their business.
Many thanks to them, KD7TOK who relayed additional
information, and the others on frequency who stood by
to help, but did exercised great circuit discipline, a
life was potentially saved (we never hear the
aftermath, do we...). The 911 operator and NHP
dispatch were very professional, and seemed genuinely
grateful for the additional calls and the assist we
were able to render.
