Greetings to all -

Please note the message below. I applaud Glen for this idea - I think
it's great and it has given me an idea of my own.

In addition to what RAMS is doing for the Salvation Army as a club, I am
hereby pledging $20 to this effort personally - $10 on behalf of myself
and $10 on behalf of my wife, Stephanie. With this, I am making a
challenge to all Northern Nevada hams; the challenge is that everyone
match this donation. $10 may seem a small amount, but if the majority
of us in this area pledge the same, why can muster a nice gift to the
folks at TSA for this effort. Recognizing that some in our midst have
likely been affected by recent negative economic trends, I think this
amount is something that all interested in being involved in this
challenge can manage (of course, if anyone wants to exceed the challenge
amount, I'm sure no one will complain).

RAMS has agreed to collect these donations, tally them, and issue a
check to TSA for the final total raised through this challenge on behalf
of all area hams. Checks can be sent to RAMS, P.O. Box , Sun Valley,
NV, 89433. Please mark your check "TSA Donation" so we know that you
are pledging to the challenge.

Deadline for submitting donations will by April 30, 2003. After that,
donations received will be tallied and arrangements made for
presentation of the check.

Following finalization of this challenge, a web page will be published
noting the amount raised and listing all those hams who contributed to
the challenge (individual contributions will not be listed by name, just
the total amount contributed and the names of all donors).

We will collect donations at the SNARS picnic this weekend for those
wishing to drop off theirs at this time. You may submit them at this
month's RAMS meeting as well. If you make your donation at one of these
events, please place it in an envelope with your name on it so that you
can be included in the list of donors.

As a side note, the Red Cross is also in need of monetary donations to
pay for shipping all of the comfort items they have collected for our
troops overseas. I will be making a separate donation directly to the
Red Cross for this effort and encourage those able to do likewise.
Also, Red Cross will be having a work party this Friday from 10 A.M.
until 3 P.M. at their office at 1190 Corporate Boulevard in Reno to
prepare items for shipping. Please come out and spend some time helping
out if you are available - "Brother, can you spare some time?"

So, there's my challenge to all of you. Here is an opportunity to show
our community and relief agencies that aside from being a reliable
communications resource, we are also public servants with big hearts and
helping hands. Take the challenge today!

73,
Matt Parker, N7TOD

Based upon the message forwarded below I would like to suggest that the
RAMS club send cash a donation of $100.00 to the Salvation Army ear
marked for Iraq. They were very good about making sure that moneys
donated to the 9/11 fund were used for victims and their families in New

York and Washington and I believe that it would be good to help again.

Anyone in favor say "I" so that our treasurer can get a check out.

Subject: Plans in Place for Salvation Army's Humanitarian Role in Iraq

The Salvation Army is mobilizing its resources in response to the

humanitarian crisis in Iraq. Emergency disaster services personnel have

been placed on standby and a forward operations base has been
established

in the region, enabling preparations to be made for a significant

humanitarian response.

The Salvation Army's international headquarters is dispatching Major

Cedric Hills, international emergency disaster services coordinator and

Major Mike Olsen, emergency disaster services consultant, to the region.

"We see the reports daily on our TV screens and in our newspapers.
We

want to be in a position to respond immediately once the security
situation

permits. Our emergency staff is prepared to provide humanitarian
assistance

and personnel from around the world are on standby, ready for immediate

deployment," said Major Hills.

Officials from the United Nations have identified water, sanitation,

food and shelter as the priorities. The humanitarian community is
gearing

up with a Humanitarian Operation Center (HOC) already established in
Kuwait

City.

"The Salvation Army stands poised to do its part to help alleviate
the

human suffering of the Iraqi people," said General John Larsson,

international leader of The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army, currently working in 109 countries, will
coordinate

its response to this crisis through the Emergency Services Office at its

International Headquarters based in London, England.
