Southern NV ARES District Report by DEC, Glenn KB7REO

John K6YDW and I attended a meeting with the NWS MIC
and WCM. Andy Bailey is the new Warning Coordination
Meteorologist (WCM) for the Las Vegas NWSFO. The
biggest issue we had to discuss was the relocation of
the SKYWARN station. It was decided to keep the
current station location. We will be using one PC for
Internet access and packet. The packet station will
only be used when the SKYWARN station is operational.
The weather statements will be monitored on a second
PC using EMWIN. The EMWIN station will be set up to
alert tone when a statement is issued from the
operations desk. Radar will be monitored on the PC
connected to the Internet.

We also discussed using APRS. This was presented as a
way to monitor home weather stations, and spotter
locations within the forecast region. This will be
discussed further at a future Net Control Operators
meeting.

John Neeley, K6YDW, Clark County Amateur Radio SKYWARN
Coordinator, will be the primary contact for any local
SKYWARN activations. John will schedule the NCO
meeting and set up the packet software for the SKYWARN
station.

The Las Vegas SKYWARN was asked to participate in the
San Bernardino Co. RACES/ECS exercise on March 29,
2003. Communications with San Bernardino Co.
RACES/ECS was conducted on the SCRN Uhf repeater
system network. Weather conditions for the Las Vegas
area were exchanged in the exercise.
