Hello Matt -
>Thanks to Mike Bellinger, ARES-EC for Jackson County, Missouri, for =
passing along >his observations regarding the storm and its aftermath.
Mike has done a fine job of detailing a cause and effect situation and his =
entire message is filled with nuggets of valuable information not only for =
hams but, anyone living in cold areas. =20
We would do well to condense that information into a partial guide for =
surviving an ice storm such as this one in our area. Of specific concern =
would be heating and power items. Even though you have a generator and can =
create your own electrical power to run a heater, you still have to locate =
the generator where the CO2 will not accumulate in a room or garage and =
cause problems. A list of "DO's and DON'T DO's" would be a good project =
to put together from this article as well as other cold weather survival =
guides.
It is most important for those of us providing emergency communications to =
be able to survive the very emergencies that we are assisting everyone =
else with otherwise, we are of no use to anyone. It is true that we don't =
have long winters here but, there have been a few occasions in the past =
where temperatures have hovered at the "0" mark and below for several =
days. Complicate that with rain and snow and you create a very serious =
situation. =20
Thanks, Matt, for sharing this information with the list.
