For those of you who are tired of seeing all the weather warnings, and let
me know that you don't like so much e-mail in your in-box, I am sure you are
fully aware of where the 'delete' key is on your keyboard. You may delete
them if you wish but, this is fair warning to you that I don't plan on
coming out in this weather to bail you out of trouble because you have not
prepared for it.
The whole purpose of these message is to keep people informed as to the
progress of severe weather events in our area. Yes, I can understand that
you receive these messages over and over. Conditions change and so should
your preparations if they are inadequate.
Preparations for winter weather isn't just having the cold weather gear in
your car or having a 72-hour survival kit available at your home. It
includes contingencies for power failures, like we saw just two weeks ago,
and having a generator or other means of maintaining your household
available. This includes a suitcase packed with overnight needs in case you
have to go to a motel for the night. For many of us, staying in a cold
house overnight is not an option. Besides, if the power goes out, you also
have to consider if you CAN go to town to a motel. The roads may be nearly
impassable and driving conditions such that you can not see the road if you
could drive. If you have standby power available, I would recommend that
you let your neighbors know that they can come sleep on your floor if
necessary if the power is out for an extended time. Believe me, sleeping on
the floor of a warm house is far better than sleeping in a cold be with the
air temperature somewhere in the 40's....
At this time, I will apologize for the many elections I have inconvenienced
by sending of these warnings. If you have made winter preparations and can
withstand the potential dangers a winter storm presents, then, you can feel
proud as you hit that delete key. Then, you can rest assured that I will
continue to send them, as they arrive, and keep everyone advised.
So, I hope you have a nice, warm weekend huddled by the fireplace and
watching your favorite TV show. Let's hope that power stays on this time
and we can all stay warm.
