Triangle area hams:
Area media would like to talk to any hams who have had first-hand contact -
talking or just listening - to any people or activity in the broader war
area via radio. That would include listening to military communications
(but NOT anything sensitive), talking to hams in Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi
Arabia, etc., and perhaps listening to shortwave broadcasts.
The goal is to add local perspective to the news... "Here's what a ham
radio operator in Raleigh learned while listening/talking..." Not likely
we'll uncover any previously unreported activity, and that's not the
point. The media (mostly the TV stations) have time to fill during
saturation news coverage, and they ARE THINKING OF US HAMS. If we have
even a small story to tell, they have time for it now.
I explained to the reporter who called me that the signals on the
frequencies in use there generally do not reach this area. I have seen
some reports of people monitoring military aircraft where signals can be
heard here.
Again, they do not want sensitive information, in the unlikely event that a
ham actually monitors something that Saddam didn't hear.
IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING to offer, you can:
- call me at 380-9944 to discuss what to do. (I will be in and out of
production sessions with clients today (Friday), so leave a message).
- call a TV station directly (NBC-17 was the station that called me...
since they asked, maybe call them first, but do let me know).
Make a tape recording if you can!!! A tape is more interesting than a
description, but they'll want both.
This request will be valid for the next day or three (say through the
weekend), obviously plus or minus actual events in the war.
