All,

NCARC is only 18 days away from sponsoring the first Technician-level
ham classes in years: Oct. 19 at the REA building, 7649 REA Parkway,
Windsor. We have the room available all day starting at 9:00 AM. That
morning there will also be a membership meeting at the Golden Corral in
Loveland, so there's lots going on that day.

This is a call for instructors and others willing to help. I'm happy to
teach theory and have done it many times. But it's good to rotate
instructors throughout the day, so I'm asking for help in teaching FCC
rules, propagation, safety, good operating practice, and the more exotic
modes.

Here's what the ARRL has to say about this kind of class schedule:

"In recent years, the hybrid class has come into being. These are one or
two full day sessions. To
be successful, the students MUST prepare prior to the beginning of the
sessions. This way some
of the material and vocabulary will be familiar. This approach may cause
sessions to be a bit
more intense, in order to squeeze in all the material needed to be
presented."

"While a single instructor is most common for small classes, with larger
classes, a team teaching
approach is better. In so doing, instructors can teach to their areas of
strength and experience.
This approach is very effective in ARECC, Amateur Radio Emergency
Communications
Courses, as well as general licensing classes."

"When using a Team Teaching concept, the students receive the added
benefit of having their
attention span extended. Switching off segments is less tiring for
everybody.
If utilizing a single experienced instructor, consider have
co-instructors to assist. This gives
another ham the opportunity to experience the nuts and bolts aspects of
amateur radio
instruction. Using a professional model, this would be equivalent to a
student teaching or a
mentoring experience. This is a double benefit. The student gets a bonus
instructor and the
process helps to groom others for carrying on the fine art of amateur
radio instruction."

I would think a short presentation from representatives of ARES and
other special interest groups would be appropriate, perhaps during breaks.

The material we teach may assist Scouts looking for the radio merit badge.

Anyone want to set up a demo station in the parking lot?

I'll be asking the board for a few bucks for coffee and donuts, maybe a
sandwich platter during lunch. Perhaps someone will volunteer to keep
things served up in the kitchen. Anyone know where the club coffee
makers went?

So, what say? Please contact me with your ideas and/or assistance. We
stand to pick up 20 or more new hams this month. Let's turn this into an
event.

Best 73,

Bob
