Subject: Electronics workshops to be held at JB Saunders

Hi Bob,

I hope you're the person I should contact with this:

I will be working with the folks at J.B. Saunders Co. in Boulder to provide a
series of "open to the public" workshops in basic electronics skills such as
soldering, (both through-hole and SMT,) fabricating your own printed circuit
bds, and an introduction to the PICAXE micro-controller. Other workshops will be
added if there's interest in them.

The workshops will be conducted in the evenings during the week when I have
available time. Each workshop topic will be covered in one evening. If any
members of your club, or anyone else you know with an interest in electronics
construction projects would like to attend any of the workshops, just have them
email me at this addy and I'll keep them posted on what's happening, when. The
email address list will be used for nothing other than to inform people of the
workshops, and addresses will be deleted at any time requested.

The workshops will be held during the week (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) from
7:00 PM to 9 (or 9:30) PM, and kept inexpensive as I can manage so that more
folks will be able to get involved. If someone would like to join in a workshop
but lacks funds, have them contact me about it. I don't want to turn anyone
away.

I do need to reimburse Saunders for the heating, lighting, supplies, etc,
though, so there will be a nominal cash charge for each session. This may vary
depending on the workshop topic and the materials provided.

Each workshop will be held more than once and on varying days so that one day or
another will be convenient for just about everyone. If there's someone who works
evenings but would like to get involved with one of the workshops, they should
let me know and 'll try to set one up for them on a Saturday afternoon.

The first workshop will be on electronics soldering and de-soldering and the
tools and materials to use. Those attending are welcome to bring their own
soldering iron or station and hand tools, although I've made arrangements with
JB Saunders to have a few inexpensive irons available for those who lack such
tools. The workshop will be a good place to learn what it is that people do need
that they don't already have. Supplies such as solder, solder wick, and scrap
circuit bds and components to practice on will be provided.

The first workshop will be on Thursday evening, 3-28-13 at 7:00 PM at the JB
Saunders retail store, 3095 Sterling Circle, Suite 1, Boulder CO 80301. Note
that the business has moved from 4700 Sterling Drive to Sterling Circle.

The cost for the workshop is $10 cash, with an additional $5 for supplies. If a
couple, a parent and child, or a whole family wants to come and get involved,
$25 will work to cover everyone. Again, if someone would like to come to the
workshop but just can't afford it, have them contact me and I'll get them in.

Electronics is my hobby as well as my vocation, and my goal with these workshops
is simply to make the electronics hobby easier and more interesting and fun for
everyone.

Those interested should contact me in advance of the workshop so I know how many
to prepare for. But if someone else wants to come the night of the workshop,
they should bring them along and we'll make room for them. If only one person is
interested, I'll still hold the workshop for them.

---

There are no age requirements, but a responsible adult must accompany those
under 16 years of age. Access to the building at that time of the evening will
be on the "street" side of the building through the door to the immediate left
of the garage door. You may park on the street or in the store's regular parking
lot on the south side of the building, but you will need to enter through the
street-side door as the business closes for the day at 5:30 PM and the front
door will be locked. There is a restroom available in the accessible area of the
building.

Some sort of eye protection is mandatory for your protection when soldering. It
doesn't have to be safety glasses, it just has to keep things from hitting you
in the eye.

This is an ideal location for such workshops, as it has a good deal of space, is
well lit and heated, my personal electronics bench is there along with my test
equipment, and there are a few million electronics parts handy if any components
get broken and need to be replaced. Hard to beat.

Please forward this to those in your club, or anyone else you know who may be
interested in attending any of the workshop sessions. Please limit all
communications to emails to me, as I just don't have any time to spare for phone
calls regarding the workshops. Also, JB Saunders is basically providing the
space for these workshops as a public service, and I don't want them to spend
any of their employee's paid time answering questions about this, as they don't
know the details in any event. Such inexpensive group workshop space is hard to
find, so please just contact me with any questions.

Thanks,

John (Daly) West - (kb0onb)
