[NCARC] FW: [HamfestCommittee] Quick Vendor notice.

Charles,
You and your experience are an invaluable asset to us.  You massive efforts have been acknowledged by everyone as the reason the Hamfests did as well as they did.

Tim's answer was factually correct but is rather terse and sounds unfriendly.  I will ask you to overlook the apparent tone of his message for now, and understand instead that your worth to the Hamfest Committee is not exceeded by anyone else.

All who have worked or are working for the benefit of NCARC deserve a round of applause!  The Club would quickly die without the 7% who work on its behalf.

Now I have a question for you, and this is to be taken as a request for YOUR opinion.  Why do you think raising prices in an inflationary time is improper?  I happen to be the one who first suggested it.  My position was that a minor increase in prices would not affect attendance of either Vendors or Visitors, but would make a major difference in how much the club made from the event.

After all, Ham-Con charged a $25 entrance fee, just over 3 times what we are
suggesting.  They had 24 Vendors, I believe.  The forum I attended was my reason for attending, and it failed to address the topic in any meaningful way.
I will never attend another ARRL Ham-Con as a result.

How many Vendors have we attracted in the past Hamfest years?  We are starting early to try to do better than ever before.  Joe (TYU) and Mike (USB) are at the forefront of this effort, with Joe as the Contact man.  There are a lot of other people working behind the scenes to make this all work out, and you know that from experience.

We know that humans make errors.  Only those who do nothing make no errors.
We will make errors, and raising the prices may perhaps be one of them.

Please tell me exactly why you have the opinion that it can hurt our net proceeds from the Hamfest.  Your opinion bears a lot of weight with me, and I want to know the details.

Thanks!

Well, how about that?  I raise an issue about the Hamfest committee raising
the prices to a ridiculous level without any apparent thought as to how it
might affect attendance, etc. and what do I get?  A smart ass comment that I
should have been attending Hamfest committee meetings.  Must be these people
know more than I do about the process.after all, I only ran 2 very
successful Hamfests in a row so what could I possible know?  Okay Tim - I
will stay out of it.  Go do what you will.

It was decided at the last ham fest committee meeting that was open to all.
Best to come to the meetings for the discussion than to 2nd guess those that
were there after the fact.

I do not agree with the price increases. It's going to hurt the hamfest. Has
this been run past anyone?  Board?  Membership?  Move the hamfest back where
it was, return the prices to where they were and concentrate on restoring
damaged vendor relationships. Just my position

I did go to Estes Park for Ham-Con.  I gave a copy to every Vendor present.

Without exception, every one who was not a local said: "What is the
address?"

Also, those people did not know who "N.C.A.R.C." was.  Should we not spell
it

out for them?  The trade-off will be smaller type.

I suggest that we add the physical address to the card.  Also, if these
cards can be

mailed, how about the return address being printed on the other side?  If
this is

acceptable, then what address should we print there?

Also, can Word print from a mailing list?  I have never tried to print from
a mailing list

with Word so I do not know how or if it is possible.

As far as I was concerned, The ARRL Ham-Con was a bust.  I wasted $25 on
admission
and went to what was supposed to be an Antenna Modeling presentation.  This
was my
only reason for making the trip.  The presentation never got to actual
modeling techniques
of any worth.  Instead, the presenter discussed antennas themselves.  He
presented one
basic formula on how to convert dBi to dBd, and he got that wrong!  I
politely asked if he
had it wrong, and his reply was to say that he would look at it later!    So
much for Experts
and their ability to convey information.  Needless to say, I will never
attend another ARRL
Convention.

The number of Vendor tables was quite small.  I heard there were 24 Vendors,
and that is
a pitiful showing for such a ballyhooed event.

My conclusion of interest to us, NCARC.  Make certain that the presenter
provide meaningful
information on the topic advertised.  If this is not so, our reputation
suffers, and we don't want that.
