(Jogging my memory...) And adding on to what Ed said:
Another interesting device that I stumbled across is the computer driven
SignalHound USB-SA44 spectrum analyzer.
>From WWW.signalhound.com:
"The *Signal Hound USB-SA44* is a USB-based 1 Hz to 4.4 GHz compact spectrum
analyzer. It is simple to use and an effective troubleshooting tool for
general lab use, engineering students, ham radio enthusiasts, and
electronics hobbyists. Using recent innovations in RF technology, the Signal
Hound has the sensitivity, accuracy and dynamic range you’d expect in a unit
many times its cost."
Right now the SignalHound will also demodulate AM and FM via the computer
sound card. I talked to the folks at SignalHound and they will be releasing
a software update in about a month or so that will also demodulate SSB
signals. If I get one of these devices then I might also be able to clean
up my 432.1MHZ SSB audio!
Also there is a yahoo group:

There is some really interesting things being done with Software Defined
Radios (SDR) and like kind test gear that is starting to come out for a
reasonable price.

(Too bad I have to work to get $$$ for toys; it doesn't leave any time to
play with them)
