Hi Tim-
Nice to hear from you, and congratulations on studying up for your first
test! The exams are typically given the second Saturday of each month. We
have two exam "teams"-- one in Loveland and one in Greeley. On odd numbered
months one team gives the test, and on even numbered months the other team
gives the test. There are a few months over the summer that the tests don't
happen. I'm forwarding this email to our two exam coordinators and
hopefully they will fill you in on the next test times.

Orlin Jenkens - K0OJ (nickname is "cooooge" spelled K0OJ which is his
callsign. Email is k0oj at msn.com
We've got a great bunch of people involved in ham radio clubs in the
Northern Colorado Area. Many of these folks would be glad to help you get
your equipment set up as needed-- although it sounds like you've already
made a nice start.
There is a Greeley based club (Weld Amateur Radio Society - www.warsco.org )
and a Loveland based club (Loveland Repeater Association -
http://lovelandrepeater.org ). A number of local hams really enjoy the
hobby and camaraderie and belong to more than one organization. Let me know
and I can track down specific people to contact-- it also looks like all of
the websites are up to date.
I know the most about NCARC--The Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club has
about 100 members, and has regular monthly meetings-- and just like the
other 2 clubs you don't have to have your license yet to come join us. We
meet the 3rd Saturday morning of each month. Our website is at
www.ncarc.net Our next meeting is this coming Saturday at 9:00-10:00 am at
the Golden Corral Restaurant kiddie cornered over from Sam's club on Harmony
Road. We will have a special presentation on Baluns (a part that helps
antennas work better) at this meeting. People start to gather for breakfast
at around 8:00 am (I think the cost of breakfast is about $10). Here's the
info:

Calling all HAMS in the Northern Colorado Area:
Ever wonder what the word BALUN stands for? Why do you suppose you might
need one? Well, come find out. If you haven't met this essential part of an
antenna system before, it's time that you do. This coming Saturday February
21st, Virgil Leenerts, W0INK will give a very practical presentation on the
Balun and how it can help get the best signal out on the air with a minimum
of interference.
You can take a look in advance at the materials Virgil will use out on the
NCARC website at www.ncarc.net.
Meeting time: Breakfast starts at 8:00 am
Saturday February 21st
Regular meeting at 9:00 am ~ 9:30 am
Presentation: 9:30 am - 10:00 am

Technologies and has been a licensed amateur since 1953. Currently an ARRL
Technical Specialist and a consultant doing part time consulting work for
such companies as SCOM and others. Virgil has an electronics lab at home,
which serves his interests in electronics as a hobby and vocation. Virgil's
interest spans the analog world from DC to Light including power supplies,
audio, RF, and antennas.
---------------------------------------------------------
Hope to meet you sometime-- if you do come to the meeting on Saturday (or at
any of our future meetings, ask any of the hams when you come in where I am
sitting and I'd be happy to introduce myself and introduce you to the other
people. I used to be the president of NCARC-- but decided it was time to
let someone else lead forward!
Good luck on your studying and on setting up your station-- there are also
lots of hams around who can help in the setup also. Just send out an email
to this list.

Hi there,
I live in Fort Collins. I'm new to HAM radio and I'm studying up to
get my first license. Does anyone know when/where I can take the
test?
I've been keeping my eye on ebay for some decent used stuff. I've got
a big cottonwood tree in my front yard and was thinking about a sloper
dipole for the antenna, I found a place online selling some copper
jacketed steel cable in 100 foot lengths that should fit the bill...
Right now I've been amusing myself DX'ing with a loop antenna I made
out of copper pipe and an adjustable capacitor from an old clock
radio. It's fun but I want to transmit!
Thanks,
Tim
