They have some 8051 microcontroller cards like this one:
http://www.pjrc.com/store/dev_pcb_assem.html
complete with the LCD add-on at the CSU surplus warehouse these days.
They have them marked for $5.00. I bought one and it works fine.
I went back and got another which I have not tried yet.
The 8051 is mainly used as a industrial controller from what I gather. But
there are free
C and ASM compilers for it. This board would let you program some LEDs and
the
LCD and get some experience with how microcontrollers work generally. This
board
is programmable through a 9-pin serial port.
If you are interested, the CSU surplus warehouse is supposed to be open
weekdays
from 8 to 4 with an hour off at noon (sometimes they close early). They
have a
website which you can easily find by googling, and they are located a block
north
and a block west of the intersection of Prospect and College. I usually
go west on Prospect, directly after the intersection with College there is
an alley
going north. Take that and it drops you out on Lake street. Go left (west)
across
the railroad tracks and turn south at the silver barn-like building adjacent
to the
tracks on the west side.
