Hi folks-

We're planning on teaching a ham radio technician class this fall sponsored
by LRA and NCARC. This class will be held Thursday evenings starting
October 5th from 7-9 pm in Fort Collins and will run for 8 weeks (skipping
Thanksgiving). There will be a VE test session conducted by Mike Hickerson,
W0MBH to held at the end of the class. Please spread the word to anyone
you know who might be interested in getting their technician class license.
The class is free of charge but those taking it will need to have a copy of
the text (see below).

We're also looking for instructors and are hopeful those who taught this
last spring or wanted to teach this last spring will sign up in addition to
some new folks. It's very helpful to have a variety of hams come in and
share their enthusiasm and expertise! We're also looking for instructors
and people who can come demonstrate different operating modes. We're hoping
to have a demonstration at each class ranging from HF operating to digital
modes, etc.

This class will be structured in similar fashion to the one held in Loveland
this last spring. The LDS church Fort Collins Ward wants to set up an
emergency communications training using ham radio similiar to what the
Loveland Stake set up this last spring. They are encouraging and opening up
this class to all interested people in the area who want to get a tech class
license.

The text we will be using is "The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual - Level 1
technican class" ($24.95... available from Barnes and Noble as a special
order, Amazon, or direct from ARRL). This book in 7 chapters covers the new
technician class license material. From my own look at this book-- it is
very clearly written and is quite an improvement over the older text we
used. The question pool has changed somewhat and some of the less used
technical areas in the hobby have been de-emphasized in favor of newer
technologies (such as the digital modes).

If you are interested in being part of this class as an instructor, student,
or willing to come demonstrate a mode of operation-- please contact either:

or

Greg Averill, K0GSA

I think you will find this a very rewarding endeavor. It also significantly
boosts the local population of trained ham radio operators who are
interested in the clubs and in ARES membership.
