Howdy-
Virgil (W0INK) gave a presentation on setting up simple vertical antennas at
the NCARC meeting this last Saturday. The gist of it is that we've got the
"architecture" wrong for multi-band ham radio antennas. Instead of putting
all the work into making multiband antennas resonant at a lot of different
frequencies with traps, etc. it's much easier and just as effective to use
an automated matching device at the antenna to coax connection. This setup
significantly simplifies the antenna design. Essentially you stick up a 5M
piece of tubing, add some ground radials, put the automated tuner at THAT
end of the coax, and voila---- a very practical and efficient radiator.
The link below is an example. Virgi showed us several vertical antenna
setups around the Loveland area he has helped establish.
Plus-- Virgil demystified some of the other terms thrown around. I wish we
had recorded the presentation! Of course.... I wish we had recorded ALL of
our presentations the last few years at least.
