Tom,
Yes, a Raspberry Pi (or other device) can easily be set up to self-host a website. Where the group has talked about using Wordpress, the requirements are a little more than running a static html site. However, it is still very possible to do on a Pi.
I would encourage you to Google the pros and cons of self-hosting a website. While could be saving on hosting costs and have greater flexibility/customization options, you are also accepting the burden of hardware maintenance, software updates, security, and other trade offs.
MVMA could indeed self-host a site. I believe the security concerns and traffic load would be minimal since this would be a very low profile site. Using a comercial host is probably more convenient though. Just depends on our priorities.

P.S. I have a raspberry pi cluster that I am working on spinning up. Once up, that could easily host a site. I just need to get it running… I should also mention the learning opportunities of self-hosting, however I need to run off to work.
