Found an easy to install and use the 'mail' feature of 'Winlink' with 
similarly configured local stations using 'telnet'
in lieu of a TNC and radio.
The embedded application is 'made for' AX.25 (300/1200 baud), but can 
work with multiple ports and digital modes.
I used the local microwave 'meshnet' instead of the internet.
My mesh link is ~40 Mbps; 1200 baud packet AX.25 is ~0.0012 Mbps.

It seems that ARES has been promoting Winlink as the Alpha to Omega, 
begining to end, of everything.
I am seeking to find something useful with it in between disasters. :-|
