I just want to say what a great meeting (I think) we had Saturday. Those attending were:
Callsign - Name, representing
WA8APB - Bill, MVMA
W8LLY - Fred, BARC & Ohio ARES D3
W8GUC - Reuben, DARA
AB8XA - Moe, XWARN
KD8DGH - Mark, Wilmington
N8JJ - JJ
NC8Q - Chuck
AE6QU - Ron Phillips
AC8UW - Phillip Brown
I’m sorry if I forgot anyone.
Bill set aside the long agenda, much of which had been covered in list email responses, to take us back to our foundation; what we are, what we are doing, what we should be doing. His minutes of this meeting will be more enlightening on this. Chuck read the “about” from our web site:
ABOUT: A group of Amateur Radio operators promoting high speed(1) Wireless networking using low cost commercial devices ‘flashed’ with open source firmware in the Miami Valley (‘Greater Dayton’). Specifically the devices supported by the Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network(2) firmware.
The purpose of the alliance is to promote a resilient high speed network supporting emcomm/auxcomm applications such as, but not limited to: IP (video) telephones, IP cameras, chat servers, file servers, web based services, … Anything that can be transported using the internet can be transported by this network.
We discussed the problem of “promote” being read as “provide,” which can and has pushed us beyond our financial and manpower resources. Some like Wilmington have taken the initiative to create their own mesh, and link to main network via tunnel. That’s happening in Hamilton as well and is as we envisioned it. Others seem to not want to move forward until MVMA brings mesh to their area. We agreed we can’t do that and must find other ways to encourage involvement. I volunteered to help Stan with the web site as I do with the mailing list. Bill promised to provide me and Stan his personal MVMA email list we can feed into mailman.
We worked at defining the scope of our involvement. We reaffirmed we’re focused on Ohio ARES District 3. Fred volunteered to help us establish Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with GCARES and/or District 3. We agreed to DARA and XWARN deploying, managing, and maintaining their own nodes. Reuben stepped up to represent DARA and I represented XWARN in Bob Baker's and Phil Verret's absence. Chuck, JJ, and I will maintain the KE8MVM password, temporarily changing it for those who need WiFi Scan access, etc. on a node… and we’ll coordinate this with each other. We lightly touched on the cost (including manpower) vs benefit of our existing nodes, but this needs to be discussed in much more detail.
We agreed that to promote, we must be the shining example of how well a network can function… and we aren’t there yet. We feel MVMA should act as a coordinator for individuals in the local mesh, encouraging but not trying to enforce, AREDN recommendations/conventions and sound practices, including firmware/security currency, that may impact others on the network.
We agreed we must immediately try to fulfill our obligation to RF link DARA to the mesh. While perhaps not optimal, we agreed to immediately proof of concept a MVHS to DARA link using on-hand 5.8 GHz equipment—including the MVHS NSM5 with Chuck’s medium reflector. Bill will provide Chuck an AGM5 XW to configure for Reuben. We need to move FAST on this! We’re running out of weather.
Mark testified to the benefit of the AREDN-S SSID change for Wilmington, as did Chuck for MVHS and KAS. We agreed to AREDN-N for DARA northward, but to leave the central area all in AREDN, at least for now.
We got into the first topic of the agenda and Bill detailed a number of roles he needs relief from. There’s enough for a healthy size team there and I’ll defer to Bill posting them all here. It’s far more than any one person can do. Please take a task if you can when he posts them. Reuben and Phillip Brown stepped up for Hamvention, but will of course need help. That’s some of our highest visibility.
We ran out of time as some had other commitments. I thank those who were able to attend and contribute, and I look forward to our next meeting.
