Like everything MVMA; we are progressing, learning from experience, and taking new directions due to these experiences One thing about the AirRouter is that it has a built in basic switch. Also in the loaner kit is a BasicTalk, ready to plug in (end user to supply a PoT). The exacting instructions (with screen shots) show it plugging into the AirRouter... along with their computer at the same time (thus the need for the switch). I want to remind all you IT gurus... in that the Loaner Kit needs be plug-n-play; a no-brainer to the curious ham (who might even struggle to set up a ham radio for CTCSS). The only need for the computer connection at the same time as the BasicTalk... is to retrieve the IP address assigned to the BTalk. Currently I have the BTalks IP address reserved on thE AirRouter, so it shouldn't really change. But, trying to make this one-shot at recruiting WORK... I want overboard on making certain there would be success. So if the loaner kit were to be two NanoStations, I could do the same; reserve the BTalks IP address on one of the NS's, or we could just include a 1630 Grandstream phone instead of the BTalk, which you can get the IP address from the 1630's screen (no need to connect a PC to obtain it... in case there's an issue). I realize that to us experienced meshies - that making a VoIP call may be boring; but I';ve witnessed excitement over this during presentations. The thought of making a full duplex telephone call over ham-radio-only frequencies is quite amazing to non-meshie hams. All these ideas are good, and need to be brought up during a monthly meeting... or the GCARES weekly Mesh net Offer the idea, obtain approval (verbally is fine)... and it's done. I am kinda proud of our Loaner Kit. The first Hamvention that AREDN joined us at... when they heard of this kit... they asked many questions, and then asked me to send them pics and the PDF file of the instructions that accompany it. Soon after, the one AREDN guy (that now is no longer a part of it) put together a similar kit for use in his area. Andre mentioned that his group might do the same. Goals I've had with the loaning of the loaner kit:* assume the interested ham has very little (or zip IT experience)* everything is plug-n-play* all that his/her computer needs is a browser; no new anything need be downloaded or installed for this initial experience.* the ability to make a VoIP telephone call Tim
