Two miles through the trees on 2397 MHz. Hmmm. Have you considered 900 MHz?
Here is my profile to MVHS on 917 MHz:
nc8q <> mvhs 917 MHz
I got 15 dB above noise floor, however there was a 250 watt 930 MHz 
paging transmitter about 20 feet away at MVHS.

Here is N8ZM-60ft<>NC8Y-30ft profile at 917 MHz:

N8ZM<>NC8Y 917 MHz
Similar profiles and 1/3 closer. If 900 MHz would be considered, a site 
survey 880 -> 940 MHz is highly recommended.
