...MARYLAND STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL WILL BE CONDUCTED WEDNESDAY...

Maryland has seen more than 25 tornadoes in a single year. In
addition, each year has hundreds of reports of wind damage from
severe thunderstorms. In order to allow Marylanders to practice
their plans for what to do when a Tornado Warning is issued for
their location, the Maryland statewide tornado drill will be
broadcast over NOAA Weather Radio at 9:45 AM Wednesday morning.
This year, NOAA Weather Radio will broadcast the drill as a
Special Weather Statement, which will not alarm on any system, but
will allow for activation of individual and organization emergency
plans.

The Maryland statewide tornado drill provides schools, businesses,
and families with the opportunity to practice their tornado safety
plans...prior to...an actual tornado situation. The safest
locations are basements or an interior hallway or room on the
lowest floor of buildings away from windows. First floor interior
bathrooms and closets should be abandoned for more substantial
shelter if possible.

This practice drill is conducted in support of Severe Storms
Awareness Week in Maryland, as proclaimed by Governor Larry
