THIS IS THE FOURTH IN A DAILY SERIES OF CONSIDERATIONS FOR SWIMMERS
AND WADERS HEADING FOR THE OCEAN THIS SUMMER.
A STRONG RECOMMENDATION IS TO NEVER SWIM ALONE...ESPECIALLY ON
MODERATE OR HIGH RISK DAYS FOR THE FORMATION OF DANGEROUS RIP
CURRENTS.
IF POSSIBLE...ALWAYS SWIM AT BEACHES WHERE LIFEGUARDS CAN SEE YOU.
ALWAYS WATCH YOUR CHILDREN CAREFULLY WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING NEAR THE
BEACH...SURF ZONE INTERFACE. A SEA GOING CURRENT COULD EASILY LIFT
THEM AND SEND THEM OUT THROUGH THE BREAKING WAVES.
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT 80 PERCENT OF ALL BEACH RESCUES ARE AT
LEAST IN PART...RIP CURRENT RELATED.
SWIMMING IN OCEAN CURRENTS AND WAVES IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN
SWIMMING IN THE RELATIVE CALM OF A POOL. CURRENTS AND WAVES
CONSTANTLY CHANGE IN THE OCEAN, CAUSING SWIMMERS TO DEVELOP FATIGUE
MORE QUICKLY THAN IN THE COMFORT OF A POOL.
SMOOTH WATER LOCATED BETWEEN BREAKING WAVES CAN BE THE SIGN OF A RIP
CURRENT. IF IN DOUBT...DONT SWIM OUT IN THIS CHANNEL OF WATER.
MANY OF OUR NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE SHORE VISITORS AND SWIMMERS
COME FROM INLAND LOCATIONS WHERE THERE IS VERY LITTLE AWARENESS OF
THE LIFE THREATENING DANGERS OF RIP CURRENTS.
IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...STAY CALM! RIDE THE CURRENT FOR A WHILE
AND THEN SWIM PARALLEL TO THE SHORE AND OUT OF ITS SEAWARD FLOW.
THEN HEAD BACK SAFELY TO SHORE.
WE MUST RESPECT THE AWESOME POWER OF WATER...MAKE IT OUR FRIEND BY
UNDERSTANDING AND STANDING CLEAR OF ITS DANGERS.
