...RIP CURRENT AWARENESS WEEK JUNE 5-11...

THIS IS THE THIRD IN A DAILY SERIES OF CONSIDERATIONS FOR SUMMER 
BATHERS ALONG THE ATLANTIC OCEAN WATERS. 

A STRONG RECOMMENDATION IS TO NEVER SWIM ALONE...ESPECIALLY ON HIGH 
RISK DAYS FOR DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS AND IF POSSIBLE...ALWAYS SWIM 
AT BEACHES WITH LIFEGUARDS. 

SWIMMING IN OCEAN CURRENTS AND WAVES IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN 
SWIMMING IN THE RELATIVE CALM OF A POOL.  CURRENTS AND WAVES 
CHANGE IN THE OCEAN WATERS AND FATIGUE DEVELOPS MORE QUICKLY THAN 
SWIMMING IN THE CONSISTENT WATER OF A POOL. 

SMOOTH WATER LOCATED BETWEEN BREAKING WAVES COULD SIGNAL THE 
PRESENCE OF A RIP CURRENT.  IF IN DOUBT...DON'T GO OUT IN THIS 
CHANNEL. 

REMEMBER...IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 80 PERCENT OF SURF BEACH RESCUES ARE 
ATTRIBUTABLE AT LEAST IN PART TO RIP CURRENTS.  RIP CURRENTS OCCUR 
ON MANY SURF BEACHES EVERY DAY...INCLUDING THE GREAT LAKES! 

IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...STAY CALM AND FLOAT IT OUT AND/OR TREAD 
WATER. WHEN FREE OF THE CURRENT... LATEST RECOMMENDATIONS ARE TO 
SWIM AT AN ANGLE TOWARD SHORE.  IF YOU FEEL YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO 
REACH SHORE...DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF BY WAVING AND/OR CALLING 
FOR HELP.
