Prior to our last meeting I asked Mike Barrett K3MMB what equipment he
suggested, Mike replied:
There are many new and exciting things happening in the EMCOMM
community. I will ask Steve Waterman to give us a glance at the
foundation and the best path for the use of Winlink and it's new features.
As far as modem, if you are using winlink, the SCS PTC family of pactor
3 modems are the best that can be had. Steve can add to that based on
more experience. Honestly, any of today's rigs will do the job. I (and
TSA) use ICOM, with good results. Arlington county is finding the the
kenwoods carry the load quite well, as I am sure all others will
When I put together an HF station for winlink, it runs about 2200.00.
Icom 718, SCS modem, SGC tuner and rigblaster plug and play.
Then Mike passed that request along to Steve Waterman, K4CJX. St eve's
response is listed below.
Steve's preference:
HF Transceiver: Kenwood TS-480HX. $1080
Modem: PTC IIEX with P3. $1000
LDC 200 Pro Auto-tuner. $230
B & W antenna 90 feet. $275
VHF/UHF Transceiver: Kenwood V71A
Kantronics 9612 Plus modem
50 AMP DuraComm Switching Power supply (rack)

Mike added:
So, for now these seem to be good suggestions for those seeking advice
as to how to proceed. I think one of the things that was said at our
meeting was sound, these suggestions give us an idea as to what type of
equipment will do the job.
