a) That amp is an (XN-3) meaning a Navy prototype version
b) It has a Navy contract number meaning it was almost certainly for the
USMC
Yep - a 1979 USMC doc says "The basic receiver-transmitter for the
AN/PRC-104
will be used in the future fielding of several other HF equipments. Some
examples are:
The AN/PRC-105 has a more powerful amplifier (100 watts versus 20 watts for
the
AN/PRC-104), and is due in 1985."
AN/PRC-105 shows up in a 1987 USMC doc and also in a 2017 HERO/EMCON doc
c) While the PRC-105 is listed as a two-man carry, that is presumably for
Army use
(otherwise it takes just one US Marine) :-)
