The "plan" was to check into the Collins Collectors Net on Friday night
early but the TX issues prevented that, and it was COLD out there in the
parking lot!!! The problem was self-induced, the PRC-515 I have can be used
with a handset or headset/boom mic, the handset audio is very poor and my
hearing loss doesn't help!! The headset/boom mic works fine but there is no
audio for anyone else to listen to. I decided I would see if connecting a
LS-454 speaker would provide audio for anyone who cared to listen, the
PRC-515 has two ports, the LS-454 worked fine but one problem!!! Connecting
the speaker DISABLES the TX audio!!!
That was confirmed on Sunday at home when I had time to do some testing.
Verne, W6LPM, rigged up a base he could drive the rear wheel of his vehicle
on to and we raised a 30 foot sectional military mast. I had a 80 meter
dipole I had built of portable operation that was hung from there. Band
conditions were good that night, with just 20 watts I got S9 plus 10 signal
reports from the Net Control in Los Gatos (Santa Cruz Mountains) and also
from several stations in the LA area.
For those who don't know, the PRC-515 is a packset designed by Collins of
Canada, used by the Canadian Armed Forces, the US Marines and also built
under license in Yugoslavia, my set is a Yugoslavia made set.

Jay - We/I missed you this time! Next year!
Off the top of my head:
Started off Thursday evening with a HUGE feast at Jocko's in Nipomo. All the
hype is true! We all had major leftovers the next day.
Fox hunt went off relatively quickly.
Most of The Regulars were there, w/ the exception of Dennis W7QHO and Tom
WA6OPE. I'm not sure what the story was.
Talks were varied and well attended. Hank Brown did a talk on easy hacks for
the workbench. One of them, a simple cap leakage tester consisting of a
spare VOM test probe, 100k resistor and a neon night light bulb is in the
works on my bench right now. Mark Blair NF6X did a talk on a multi-function
wire line field phone listening device he recently picked up, John Castorina
presented the winning tale of the mustang he'd been working on for the
Oshkosh show. He showed us one of his spares several years ago, If I recall
correctly. I talked briefly about my adventures last year installing,
debugging, and operating my BC-375 along with other gear brought to Moffett
and Stockton by Mark Miller, a fellow ham, to work in the Collings' B-17
"Nine-o-Nine" and in a comm trailer on the ramp at Bomber Camp Stockton. A
mil-vehicle restorer (my brain is a sieve!) gave the tale of one of his
immaculately done projects and how it is now near Moscow in a museum serving
as an example of post-wa r "Lend-Lease" equipment. He also had a remarkable
tale of how he found out where nomenclature tags were finally installed
correctly on a 50's armored command car he'd restored years ago: long
retired Vietnamese vets in San Jose who'd actually driven the beasts!
Tom W6TOM was finally able to check into the Collins Net after wrestling
with a cranky mode switch, then an interminable wait out in the cold Friday
breeze. Massive ragchewers, these Collins folks!
Swapmeet wasn't earth shattering, but goodies moved around and there were
many pieces that ultimately ended up in the Junk Auction.
Bjorn SM5UR(?) won 1st place for his 50's Swedish RX/TX operating station.
He and Paul N6FEG worked a deal and it went home with Paul on Saturday.
PS: Geoff, the old PSU chassis i picked up from you years ago in Monterey
and rebuilt w/the help of W7QHO and WA6OPE, is keeping my BC-375 on the air
quite nicely! 55W is always a fight these days, but it's what I have and I
love it!
Cheers!

retire now as of 5/4/17 but don't really want to. But work may be more
lenient in the future to let me take time off as I become more addled and
decrepit and I have a really nice cane I can use for my "back problems" ;-).
