[MRCG] Veterans Day display

I got my license in 1983, I had always had an interest in radio from
childhood but was never in the right place as far as an Elmer, my father
never encouraged or discouraged my interest. One of my high school friends
had gotten his start in a career in the insurance business with my father's
help, he also had become a ham a few years before I had. In his case it was
his wife's father who was a ham that got him interested, he mentioned to my
farther that I now had a ham radio license while visiting one day.
My father told him he had been trained as a radio operator in WWII, he flew
on B-24 bombers, my friend told me that he tested my father who still
retained a surprising proficiency in CW even after almost 30 years. A few
months later my father passed away, he was always very reticent about his
war time experiences and my suspicion is that my interest in radio brought
back memories he would rather have forgotten.

Hi Tom - Yes, I noticed the same things with the CPO The girls pick it up
very quickly, very inquisitive. Boys, not so much...
Once they get the hang of it I tell them to get their buddies to learn code
so they can send secret messages to them in school - and the teachers can't
figure it out. The parents wince and then laugh.....
Then there are many adults who tell me they learned code in the Boy Scouts
- they can usually manage SOS...
When I brought the CPO into the Vets Hall a couple of years ago I heard
someone playing with it. They were sending CQ CQ WAR WAR. Who is that?
Turns out it was one of our docents, a 98 year old WWII vet who was an
infantry scout with Patton's Third Army. Art - when did you learn morse
code?? Oh, around 1943 in the Army. He still knows it (not a ham BTW)
Amazing.
