Regarding "Somebody running about 40 Hz wider.": I think that was Tim N6CC. In my waterfall display in fldigi, I could see that his shift was just a tiny bit over 850 Hz; I didn't measure carefully, but 40 Hz looks about right. That didn't cause any problems for me copying him, though; his signal was nearly 100% clean copy here in Riverside tonight. I suspect that your trouble copying him was due to local noise, since he reported copying you just fine, and I had no trouble copying him. I think that the slightly wider shift might have slightly degraded SNR, depending on how tight the receive modem filters are, but probably not enough to be a problem all by itself.
I've found that I need to crank my Tx audio well below 100% power to avoid reports of audio spurs, which surprised me. I've set it for 50W PEP out of my 100W PEP rig, and that seems to make my signal clean. The Tx level pot is set really low on my audio interface even with 15dB Tx audio attenuation in fldigi, so maybe I need to fiddle with some more settings in my silly newfangled radio's menus? Or maybe I just need to get off my butt and get FSK working on my T-368C. :)
Once I'm running proper green gear on Clatternet, I might still set up fldigi hooked to an auxiliary receiver to serve as a station monitor to let me monitor my Tx signal spectrum.
