I've also had fits with 80. Lots of white noise, a few signals buried in it. Checked all my antenna connections, even. Standalone separate RX on a Windom produces same results. 40 might be worth a shot. 80 doesn't settle down noise-wise until ~2200-2300 most nights here.
Maybe pick a pair and try both?

I'm located about 55 miles north of San Francisco and my experience
(SSB, CW) is that we'd have a more reliable path between NoCal
and SoCal on 40. Admittedly don't spend much time on 80 anymore.
Although the noise level the past few weeks has made 40 dicey too.
Wherever you guys want to meet, I'll give it a shot.
