Ok, I found a description of diddles here:
http://www.aa5au.com/gettingstarted/rtty_diddles_technical.htm
The fldigi software (i.e., the sound card modem software that I have on my Mac, and also available for Windows and Linux) sounds like it's transmitting diddles, but I don't see any way to turn them off.
Ok, here's a question for any folks interested in experimenting with Clatternet: Do y'all have Internet access of any sort at or near your operating position? If enough of us do, then I'll look into setting up some sort of side channel to communicate on during experiments, since I anticipate lots of us jamming each other while garbage spews out of teletype machines. :)
