I can remember that story about a Navy Chief sitting at a LOP, smoking a cigarette, drinking a cup of coffee, carrying on a conversation and copying one circuit in his right ear and another in his left ear........ It's not so unbelievable as I've seen similar acts myself.  I never got that proficient but I did get to the point where I could copy in my head and decrypt using a one time pad.
