Antenna contacts got nothing to do with this problem.

I've never done this and had no adverse effects, so far at least.   
Really large tubes like a 3-1000Z need filament inrush protection but  
only a few seconds worth.

Good question.  An oscillator tube requires some minimum sensitivity  
and amplification capability to work while an amplifier stage is more  
dependent on what's driving it.  When you do get the oscillator   
working again it would be interesting to go back to the old set of  
tubes and see if/how they perform as RF amplifiers and modulators.
