In the late 60’s, while stationed in Germany we were able to hear (and I didn’t say this, talk to) dispatchers for gag/electric companies, police and fire throughout the South Eastern US. We had three RC-292’s on the roof of our 5 story barracks. We later installed an AS-1729 with 6 ground planes and it worked even better. We switched of with a PRC-25 and a VRC-46. We also had great range in Germany and could typically contact our people out in the field and on the road and most of the time on the DZ.
