These posts on Marine mobile comms brings to mind a book I have on NVIS, written by Fiedler and Farmer. In it, the authors describe, among others, a series of communication tests the Corps conducted from a mobile vehicle on the road with various bases along the east coast. The mobile's antenna was a standard 32 foot (?) whip that was bent backwards and tied off to the vehicle.

Interesting book if you care to find it.
