On the end eyelets and metal caps, that’s exactly what I do. I’m surprised that the folks that do the cloth covered replacement vehicle wiring harnesses haven’t done headset rewiring as a sideline offering. Most of the original stuff sold now has bad wiring. I can’t imagine it would take a lot of time to make the harnesses using something besides two human hands and parts salvaged from worn equipment, or a lot of money.  And the sound quality of the old headset elements is at least equal to anything that manufacturers like Bose and others put out now - they just aren’t wireless. They don’t need to make the headset elements - there are lots of those out there. Just the headset wiring.

Permit me to add that on some HBs, the leather has shrunk such that the tinsel cord cannot be extracted. I have applied a heat gun and some have eventually released. Years ago, I bought the brown cloth wire from a vintage telephone restoration supply company. As noted, though, the diameter is a bit more than original.  Also, the original element termination cups can be re-used by cleaning and carefully reforming the clenching teeth.

Antique Electronic Supply (AES) has 20AWG brown braided cloth power cord, it is a bit stiffer but works OK and looks the part.  www.tubesandmore.com

You might want to look into hiking boot laces for an approximation to the cloth wiring cover.

Cut the plastic ends off most boot laces, the outer “weave” will slide right off the inner nylon cord. Slide that weave over your contemporary wire of choice.

Won’t fool an expert, but will certainly look “old” to everyone else!

Quick question : what racks and mounts and remotes were used with the R-148/ARC-5X radio receiver ( 12 volt version of the ARC-5/ARC-23 receiver?

Got the receiver and 14 volt dynamotor.  Looking for the rack and shock mount.

Also looking for somebody who makes new cloth covered wire replacement for WW2 aviation headphones. I recycle the wire ends ( when I can ) of the headsets when I can. But the twisted, cloth covered wiring in the headsets I can’t find or reproduce.
