Been there... done that. Rather than try and repair the code, you might simply use a new speaker that can be made to fit and such that the front panel screw holes can be filled. It might even sound better.  the xformer will be fine.

You can re-cone the speaker as long as the coil and center tube are good. There is plenty of advice, guidance from from the Audio segment.  I did a re-cone job on and LS-3, which still works.
