Where is the power supply for that radio?  The Dodge Command Car at best was 12 volt, the SCR-274-N requires 24 volt at least. Perhaps there’s a generator of some sort being toed behind the command car. In any event, this would be an ad-hoc set up done by some USAAF unit. USAAF had mobile ATC sets very similar to what was at permanent air bases they used. This photo is definitely the exception, not the rule. And probably only in use for a very short time. The SCR-274-N is not designed to stand up to field use by ground forces.

Hi Mark - You might consider this photo of an SCR-274N being used on the ground for your setup.  Most likely at an airstrip in Iran, WWII.  Betcha they were also in comms with some BC-611's in the local area...The Cryllic says "Americanski".   Lots of USA Lend Lease equipment to the Russians flowed through Iran at the time...
There is another similar photo of another Command Set mounted in an M-38, possibly at the same location, I need to go find that one...Improvising, Adapting, Overcoming.

Never say never!  HiHi

Or my own "Ground Ops" Command Set kludge...(which works great!)  LOL

Hi Folks

I'm interested in hearing about actual confirmed uses of the BC-611 communicating with USAAF aircraft during WW II.

I'm not interested in a general discussion of the pros and cons of the 611,  but rather actual instances of using them to talk to aircraft.

I've seen one drawing in a TM of a group of GI's on a hillside using the 611 to talk to a flight of B-24 Liberators,   but I've always viewed that as wishful thinking.

Reason for asking.  I've been invited to participate with a group of regional USAAF WWI re-enactors.   I'll be redoing my SCR-274N system over the winter to make it transportable for field operations.   I have a pair of 611s that work (well, one has a broken earpiece....) and I was thinking that if the 611 was used in any capacity to talk with USAAF personnel it would make an interesting demo to have people at the event (youth particularly)  talk  to each other with the 274N and a 611.

Thanks
