There was a a special BC611 that had a clip on the side for glider use, I saw one recently a military show. Don't remeber what the BC number was , though.
I imagine they used to it communicate with the SCR274 command sets aboard the tow plane.
They were low power (500 mw?) 80 meter band radios with a short antenna, so they didn't have much range.

I would compare it to the 7 transistor 50mW Lafayette CB walkie talkies I had as a child W/R/T performance.

BTW, wasn’t the Glider BC-611 a BC-721?

Not an expert or anything like that, think Breck Smith (K4CHE) did a lot of research back in the day on the subject. Never been a big fan of the 611, always thought it was overcomplicated in design, and never used near as much as Hollywood implies. Can see it netting with things like the SCR-284 but not much else. But that’s just me and as OP indicated he did not want this devolving into discussion of the 611.

I thought the gliders had a BC-721 or something. I have one. I know it is probably nearly identical to the BC-611, but for accuracy…

the BC-611 transceiver was the core component of the SCR-585 Signal Corps Radio set for CG-4A Gliders.
