We lost the USS Clamagore in Charleston due to 40 plus years of no upkeep.
If there is a Coast Guard group in the area that can try and organize a group to maintain the Taney,it is possible it can be saved.
We lost the Clamagore due to politics.
We has a group of submariners in the area that were doing maintenance, but,Patriots Point denied them access to the sub for maintenance.
We think that if Patriots Point had their way,all the ships here would be gone and there would be condos here instead, more money.

After being moored many years ago, the USS Yorktown moved for the second time during the recent storm.
The first time she moved was during Hugo where she moved 6 feet vertically due to storm surge.
The hull is in very bad shape and  she is reportedly buried in 25 feet of mud.
She is reportedly the only museum ship that cannot be moved.

My opinion from observations.

Anytime you can get old TTY gear up and running is a major accomplishment. I went to Navy TTY school in 1976 (voluntold) and we had a 50% drop out rate. The 28’s/UGC-6’s were replaced by 43’s- AKA the cassette tape monsters. Thanks to Nick England a couple of us attempted to get the USCGC TANEY up on TTY and Nick located almost every part needed. URA-17’s and Collin’s 651S-1’s. It’s been a few years of political turmoil surrounding the Taney and she’s deteriorating at a fast pace. She may better serve as an artificial reef off Maryland.. but if MSB Baltimore get their act together perhaps NRDT will be back..

Subject: [MMRCG] BB-62 on RATT net this morning

Today, December the 23rd at 9:45 or about this morning NJ2BB the Battleship New Jersey (BB-62) was active on the MMRCG RATT Net.  Other stations participating in today's net included N3KCB, K3TZJ, KA4RSZ, W1AEA, WA3GFZ, K8WXQ, KA3EKH and K4NYW as NCS.

First transmissions from the ship were a bit hectic being they were reversed but subsequent transmissions were all Normal and solid, at least at my QTH.

Communications originated from the message handing room on the New Jersey using original restored ASR28 teleprinters, CV-2460 and URA-17 encoders and decoders, Harris receivers and transmitters and the ships original antennas.

Jeff and the crew over on the ship have completed much work in getting the systems up and running again, a maze of patches and cross connections made difficult by the original ships de-milling process.

Think there next project is to get one of the larger “High Power” transmitters on line next.

As always I know and maybe speak for some others of us also that we are proud to see anyone go thru this work and get systems up in running that has not been used in decades.
