Able Archer 83 W3A special event station will be an on air only event this year. I do not completely understand the circumstances that changed our group’s ability to access the Fort Miles site overnight as we have for the past several years. The bottom line is this year there will be no operations from Fort Miles.
How does this impact the event? The only impact is to the in-person visitors who over the past several years would get a 20-minute presentation about Able Archer 83 and have the chance to go through the audio and visual displays and see the artifacts. Last year we had over 300 in person visitors and were featured on a cold war podcast.
Planned for this year, which is the 40th anniversary, was an expanded display with new visuals to explore the behind-the-scenes spy stories, it was titled “Spies- Like us” (a play on the 1984 film of the same name). Some new radios were going to be used for the on-air portion.
The Able Archer 83 co-founder Ray KE3EKH, is working diligently on setting up our alternate operating location. A few options are being investigated and should be settled on soon.

Stay tuned for updates and please plan on working our special event station October 21-22, 2023.
