As a Field Artillery Officer, we had to be familiar with calling in both Naval gunfire and close air support, even though both the Navy and the Air Force would normally have liaison teams on the ground with the troops to do those missions. I never did call in active Naval Gunfire support, but I did get a chance to call in a practice strike of real USAF F-4-E Phantoms at Fort Sill. Others in our class got to call in A-10 Warthogs. That was almost 40 years ago, though.

Hi Jeep - 5"-54 became a standard in the USN some time after WWII.  Still in use these days.

Pardon a non-Navy  person to comment. I sailed on a number of cruises while working for NAVOCEANO in DC. The DE cans I sailed on had 3"-50 guns in enclosed turrets. THE DDs had 5"-38s in turrets. Ships like the Leahy, a DLG (?) had some open 5" guns that were slightly different caliber.  Got to see a lot in Med and a UNITAS cruises.

The US Navy has (had) two types of 5” guns onboard ship - 5” 37 and 5” 54. I think the Iowas had 5” 37 ( second number I think is caliber. Has to do with a combination of shell size and barrel length ).
