I, too, carry a P38. But truth told since about 1968 when I was a DoD civ attached to the 2nd MOB at Sembach AB. Germany. The AF was using up the stocks if Cs and every month had a C-rat day. I recall that there were only 6 openers per case... I may well be wrong.  Yes the fruit has been found to be the favorite... hands down.  Last DLSA dates were in 1969-70. At the time, other agencies were piggy-backing for emergency services stocks.  National Guard issed them years after that. Well, anyway.... nuff said.

I’ve carried a P-38 on one of my two key rings for the past 55 years.  Comes in handy every now and again.  Reminds me of the period on the Happy Valley when Mid Rats got so bad that sailors were routinely pilfering the Grunts’ C-Rats that were usually stacked in a corner of the Hanger Bay ready for the morning re-supply flight.  Spring of ’68 as I recall.

Hi Jeep!

12 P-38's per case?  I forget.. (Fun Fact:  It takes 38 cuts with a P-38 to open a C Rat can...)

Favorite edible?  Fruit Cocktail!

Ham and "Mo-Fo's"....even worse than "Fat Balls and Rubber Bands"

We were munching on C's up to around 1987 when the first MRE's showed up (at least for us...),  Don't know how old they were at the time.

Trivia questions..1.  how many P38s were packed in each C-rat case?   2. What was, arguably, the favorite edible item in a C-rats box? (hint: its not the John Wayne bar) 3. What was included in the can with ham... as in "ham and xxx-xxx".  What year was the last contract date for genuine DLSA procured Cs?  Breck. do you still have your orange switchblade...... err.... shroud cutter?

Yes,  There wasn't much wrong with C-rations when you consider the circumstances.  I have a p-38 around here somewhere.- Al

 - - - The hang up hook on the H-250 was easy to break on the early handsets. The hang up hook was also a pain in the xss when used to hang up the handset on the radio its self.Often a plastic spoon was saved after consuming a "C" ration and it was attached using a 1 inch strip of 100 MPH tape.  The "C" ration was an excellent ration and everyone like them which I assume is the reason for replacing it. Aircrew members had a special pocket on the side of their flight suit sleeve for an extra spoon. Don't forget to save the "P38" and the AW paper.
