I have a similar setup. My land rover has a separate 28V 100AH LiFePo battery for the radio equipment.  I have an external military connector on the rear of the land rover where I can either tap 28V to supply external equipment or connect the solar panel to charge the battery (or both). The connector supplies 28V, 12V and input to the solar MPPT controller. I also built a box that breaks the connector into two, so I can run an external radio while charging the battery with the solar system

Answers to questions. The flexible panels are made by Ascent and can be rolled up  for storage. They are just about the right length for the top of the M151A1. Wiring  can be easily concealed. Each panel is rated for max power at over 35 volts. Sometimes I just use a single panel.  No noise, no fumes, and the engine starts at the end of the day when you are ready to depart the LZ.
