You might want to look into hiking boot laces for an approximation to the
cloth wiring cover.
Cut the plastic ends off most boot laces, the outer “weave” will slide
right off the inner nylon cord. Slide that weave over your contemporary
wire of choice.
Won’t fool an expert, but will certainly look “old” to everyone else!
